Pitching like a Pro

In a way, pitching the article you just wrote will be one of the most important aspects of your content creation. After all, the best content might not be found if it hasn't been marketed well.

We've covered the most obvious place to market your blog: on your website. However, you shouldn't stop there. Use Social Media to spread the word and to increase traffic to your site. The following advice help to organize your social media marketing activities:

Timing is everything?

In my humble opinion, this advice has to be taken with a grain of salt. I found in my research, that the more infographics and research results I read, the more different times per social media channel were recommended. I believe it to be true that it is important to realize that the different social media channels are frequented more or less at different days of the week and at different times. It might be helpful to schedule your social media with the following considerations in mind:

  • Twitter is a fast-paced channel that can be checked numerous times a day.
  • Facebook is often used in the early morning before work starts or in the afternoon, when people get tired.
  • Pinterest is focused on crafts and "How-to" projects. If you've been on Pinterest, you know how easily you can get sucked in. Therefore, people tend to use it more on the weekends rather than during their work.

Choice of Social Media Channels

Not every blog article is necessarily suitable for all social media channels. You have to have a solid understanding on who your followers are on which channels.

Some of your articles might be helpful for your audience of one channel but not for another.

Adapt your message for different Social Media Channels

Have you ever been annoyed by hashtags (#) in Facebook posts? Very likely, it was posted simultaneously on Twitter and on Facebook. Granted, hashtags are a very suitable addition to a Twitter pitch, but they aren't really needed in Facebook posts.

Also, while you have to limit your Twitter posts to 140 characters, you can be freer with your words on Facebook. The golden rule is: Which part of my audience is on which channel and how can I get their attention to read my article!

Connecting to Special Events

Are you writing an article that can be related to a certain event? Try to ride the wave and pitch your work to the respective audience a little bit ahead of time to build trust and authority.
